Malawi Elections Demand Change

Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have been given a mandate by the people, following the September 16 elections. However, this mandate is not a reward for past performance, but rather a conditional trust placed in their hands. The voting patterns indicate that Malawians are seeking change and alternatives to failed governance.

The DPP’s electoral victory is an opportunity for the party to transform and deliver a different kind of governance, one that is transparent, disciplined, and genuinely serves the people. The previous administration’s failure to deliver tangible improvements to people’s lives, despite initial popular support, serves as a sobering lesson. The new government must prioritize the needs of its citizens, who are desperate for competent governance and respect for their lives and resources.

Malawi is facing numerous challenges, including a healthcare system in crisis, a dysfunctional civil service, and corruption. Key state enterprises have been plagued by scandal and mismanagement, while regional imbalances persist. The country’s natural resources are being pillaged through illegal mining activities, and existing mining deals are shortchanging the nation. The agriculture sector is withering, and freshwater resources remain underutilized.

Citizens are expecting the new government to restore credibility to key institutions through swift and visible reforms. This includes rebuilding the healthcare system, providing fair access to empowerment programs, and fulfilling long-overdue promises to neglected regions. The government must also protect and properly steward the country’s natural wealth, stop illegal mining activities, and renegotiate existing mining deals to ensure fair returns.

As the new government forms, it must beware of opportunists and surround itself with honest advisors who prioritize national interest over personal gain. President Mutharika has been given a second chance at history, with five years to prove that lessons have been learned and that integrity will guide every decision. The Malawian people are watching, and they demand leadership that delivers measurable improvements to their daily lives. The choice and responsibility are entirely theirs, and the time for delivery has begun.
