The Lagos State Government has set an 18-month deadline for traders at the Computer Village in Ikeja to relocate to a new permanent site in Katangowa. The announcement was made by Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, during a stakeholders’ meeting with market leaders and traders.
According to Oki, the state government has invested in necessary infrastructure and facilities at the Katangowa site to create a conducive business environment. The relocation is intended to address the fact that Computer Village currently operates on land originally designated for residential use, which was converted into a commercial hub without formal government approval.
Plans to relocate the traders from Ikeja to Katangowa have been in the works since 2006, but were delayed due to the slow completion of the new site. Oki emphasized the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to inclusive governance, stating that the stakeholders’ meeting was convened to inform and involve traders in the government’s plans.
The new site in Katangowa spans 15 hectares of land and is strategically located near essential resources for businesses. Oki highlighted the benefits of the relocation, noting that the current location in Ikeja was not intended for commercial use and that the new site will provide a structured market environment that supports growth while addressing environmental and urban planning concerns.
The Lagos State Government’s decision to relocate the Computer Village is part of its efforts to promote infrastructure development and improve the welfare of Lagosians. With the relocation deadline set, traders are expected to work with the government to ensure a smooth transition to the new site. The success of this relocation will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders involved, and its outcome will be closely watched as it has the potential to impact the livelihoods of thousands of traders and the overall economy of the state.
