A major explosion occurred at the Groundwell Industrial Estate in Swindon, South West England, triggering a large emergency response. The blast happened at a building used by a printing company shortly after 7:30pm local time on Wednesday. Witnesses reported that the explosion shook homes across the town, and a subsequent fire prompted the evacuation of the estate and the closure of several nearby roads.

Multiple fire crews, including at least 12 fire engines and specialist vehicles, were deployed to battle the blaze. The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that an aerial ladder platform and water carriers were also used to combat the fire. Eyewitnesses described flames engulfing the warehouse within minutes, and footage showed a fireball lighting up the night sky, followed by a thick column of black smoke drifting across north Swindon.

Wiltshire Police described the incident as “serious” and established a large cordon in the area. Local residents were advised to remain indoors and close windows due to smoke. The cause of the explosion has not been confirmed, and a fire investigation officer is on site to begin work as soon as it is safe to do so.

The incident resulted in a power outage affecting approximately 80 properties, according to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks. The utility company reported that power was isolated due to a safety concern on their network following the incident. Authorities have reported no casualties and stated that there is no indication anyone was inside the building at the time of the explosion.

Swindon Borough Council confirmed that its emergency response team is working with police and fire crews to understand what happened, determine if anyone was hurt, and make the area safe. The council’s leader, Jim Robbins, stated that work is ongoing to address the situation.

Earlier this month, the UK government announced plans for a major drone factory in Swindon, which is scheduled to open in 2026. The 254,000 sq ft facility, operated by aerospace and defense firm Tekever, will employ approximately 1,000 staff and produce surveillance and intelligence drones. However, there is no indication that Wednesday’s blast is connected to the new site.
