Nigeria strike sparks nationwide blackout fears

Nigerians are facing a potential nationwide blackout as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has commenced a strike action. The industrial action, which began on Wednesday, is a result of the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualization of workers, and other unresolved issues.

The NUEE’s decision to go on strike follows the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) management. According to the union, the TCN management has failed to address the issues raised, including the non-payment of staff salaries since April 2025, lack of operational vehicles, and non-provision of personal protective equipment (PPEs) since 2021.

In a notice signed by the Acting General Secretary of NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, the union stated that it cannot continue to watch as the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) deteriorates. The notice listed eight key issues that led to the strike, including the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualization of workers, and non-payment of retirement benefits.

The NUEE has directed its members to withdraw their services until the TCN management is ready to meet its obligations to the workforce. This is not the first time the union has gone on strike; in June 2024, a similar industrial action resulted in disruptions to electricity supply.

The spokesperson for the TCN, Ndidi Mbah, has not responded to requests for comment on the matter. As the strike continues, Nigerians are bracing themselves for potential power outages. The impact of the strike on the already fragile electricity supply in the country is likely to be significant, and it remains to be seen how the situation will be resolved.

The NUEE’s strike notice emphasized the need for the TCN management to take immediate action to address the outstanding issues. With the union’s services withdrawn, the fate of Nigeria’s electricity supply hangs in the balance. The situation is being closely monitored, and developments are expected in the coming days.
