The Kano State Government has referred petitions and counter-petitions against Sheikh Lawan Triumph to the Kano State Shura Council for review and advice. The move follows allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad, which sparked protests in the state. On Wednesday, a group of protesters marched to the government house, seeking the governor’s intervention in the matter.

In response to the protests, Governor Abba Yusuf urged the demonstrators to submit a written petition, assuring them that he would take action based on their submission. The state government has since received several petitions and counter-petitions from various faith-based Islamic organizations, including Safiyatul Islam of Nigeria, Tijjaniya Youth Enlightenment Forum, and the Committee of Sunnah Preachers, Kano.

According to a statement issued by the spokesman for the secretary to the state government, Musa Tanko, the petitions were submitted by eight different organizations, also including Interfaith Parties for Peace and Development, Sairul Qalbi Foundation, Habbullah Mateen Foundation, Imams of Juma’at Mosques under Qadiriyya Movement, and Multaqa Ahbab Alsufiyya. The secretary to the state government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, has directed that all petitions be forwarded to the State Shura Council for careful study and advice.

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, unity, and mutual respect among all religious groups in the state. Residents have been urged to remain calm and continue with their normal activities, while also being law-abiding. The state government’s decision to refer the matter to the Shura Council is aimed at ensuring a thorough and fair review of the allegations against Sheikh Lawan Triumph.

The development highlights the sensitive nature of religious issues in Kano State and the need for careful handling to avoid escalation. The State Shura Council’s review and advice will be crucial in determining the next steps in addressing the allegations against Sheikh Lawan Triumph. As the situation unfolds, the state government’s commitment to maintaining peace and unity will be closely watched, both within the state and internationally.
