Green tech key to Nigeria’s future — Minister — Daily Nigerian

At the third Technology Ecosystem Dialogue in Abuja, organised by Young Innovators Nigeria, stakeholders gathered to discuss the role of green technology and energy revolution in transforming business and society. The event, themed “Green Tech and Energy Revolution: Transforming Business and Society”, brought together innovators, government officials, and stakeholders to explore sustainable digital and energy solutions for Nigeria’s development.

Representing Mr Olawande, Senior Adviser Obinna Ebirim emphasized the need to invest in young talent and innovation, stressing that the green and digital future is already here. He noted that technology is powering economies, redefining business models, and helping young Nigerians solve problems that once seemed impossible. The future of Nigeria, he said, will be shaped by digital codes, powered by renewable energy, and driven by the creativity and resilience of its young population.

Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Rep. Victor Ogene, called for digitalisation as a cornerstone of energy transformation, highlighting the benefits of smart metering, remote monitoring, and AI-driven systems. He cited data showing that digital monitoring can cut downtime by 30 per cent and mobile-enabled payments can raise collection efficiency from 60 per cent to over 90 per cent. With 85 million people in Nigeria still without electricity, Ogene pledged the National Assembly’s support in aligning energy policy with youth innovation.

The Director-General of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, represented by Head of R&D Balance Tyoden, emphasized the importance of citizens, youth, and women becoming co-owners in Nigeria’s energy transformation. He stressed that renewable technologies like solar mini-grids and home systems can improve lives, but warned that technology alone is not enough, and national innovation portfolios must drive inclusive growth.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, represented by his Senior Adviser Lukman Lamid, said green technology is now an imperative, requiring unified action from government, academia, and private sector players. He assured stakeholders that NITDA is ready to collaborate across sectors to ensure Nigeria benefits from and leads Africa in the adoption and implementation of green technology.

The dialogue provided a platform for showcasing youth-led solutions in energy, aimed at fixing national energy challenges and ensuring long-term food security. With energy directly tied to food systems, the programme aims to help Nigeria achieve energy independence, empower local innovators, and create sustainable, youth-led solutions to improve access to electricity and food for all citizens. The event highlighted the significance of investing in young talent and innovation to drive Nigeria’s development and achieve a digitally empowered, sustainably powered, and inclusively built future.
