Nigeria Needs Credible Ambassadors Now

Nigeria’s former External Affairs Minister, Bolaji Akinyemi, has stressed the need for the country to fill its vacant ambassadorial positions with credible candidates as soon as possible. He made this call during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme, emphasizing the importance of prompt appointments to these posts.

According to Prof Akinyemi, despite the availability of information through the internet, diplomacy still relies heavily on personal contact between ambassadors and governments. He noted that the absence of ambassadors does not hinder access to information, but it affects the interaction between governments and ambassadors, which is crucial for diplomatic relations.

The former minister highlighted the significance of ambassadors returning to their posts promptly, underscoring the role of ambassadorial contact in facilitating diplomacy. He emphasized that credible appointments should be made to fill the vacant positions, allowing Nigeria to maintain effective diplomatic relations with other countries.

Nigeria has been facing a shortage of ambassadors in recent times, with several positions remaining vacant. This has raised concerns about the country’s ability to effectively engage with the international community and promote its interests abroad. The appointment of new ambassadors is seen as a crucial step in addressing this issue and strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally.

The call by Prof Akinyemi for urgent appointments to vacant ambassadorial positions comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to enhance its international relations and cooperation with other countries. The country’s diplomatic efforts are critical to its economic development, security, and global influence, making the appointment of credible ambassadors a matter of utmost importance.

As Nigeria moves to fill its vacant ambassadorial positions, it is expected that the government will prioritize the appointment of experienced and qualified candidates who can effectively represent the country’s interests abroad. The prompt filling of these positions will be closely watched by the international community, as it is seen as a key indicator of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its diplomatic relations and enhancing its global presence.
