Nigeria’s former External Affairs Minister, Bolaji Akinyemi, has urged the government to fill its vacant ambassadorial posts with credible candidates without delay. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” he stressed that prompt appointments are essential for effective diplomacy.
Akinyemi noted that, despite the wealth of information available online, diplomatic work still depends heavily on personal contact between ambassadors and foreign governments. While the lack of ambassadors does not impede access to information, it hampers the interaction that is vital for diplomatic relations. He emphasized that ambassadors must return to their posts promptly, as their presence facilitates essential diplomatic engagement.
The shortage of ambassadors has become a pressing issue for Nigeria, with several key positions remaining unfilled. This gap raises concerns about the country’s ability to engage effectively with the international community and promote its interests abroad. Appointing new ambassadors is therefore seen as a crucial step toward strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence worldwide.
Akinyemi’s call for urgent appointments comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to enhance its international relations and cooperation. Robust diplomatic efforts are critical to the nation’s economic development, security, and global influence, making the selection of qualified, experienced ambassadors a matter of utmost importance. As the government moves to fill these vacancies, the international community will be closely watching, viewing the appointments as an indicator of Nigeria’s commitment to bolstering its diplomatic ties and global standing.
