Nigeria Immigration Enters New Era of Digital Innovation

Nigeria’s immigration management has entered a new era of digital innovation and operational efficiency, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Speaking at the passing-out parade of 689 cadets of the 50th Superintendent Basic Course of the Immigration Training School in Kano, the minister highlighted the reforms undertaken by the government to enhance national security and improve public trust in the service.

The minister, represented by the Secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, retired Maj.-Gen. Abdulmalik Jibrin, emphasized the government’s commitment to building a smarter and more secure immigration system. Recent innovations include the introduction of electronic gates at airports, digital landing and exit cards, a centralized passport production system, and real-time electronic border surveillance.

These measures are expected to strengthen border governance, improve migration management, and enhance service delivery to Nigerians and foreigners. The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, commended President Bola Tinubu and the minister for their support and reform-driven leadership in shaping the Nigerian Immigration Service into a modern, technology-driven agency.

The cadets, who underwent six months of intensive training, were urged to embrace professionalism, emotional intelligence, and a zero-tolerance attitude toward corruption. The Commandant of the training school, Comptroller Idris Akande-Ozigi, noted that the training prepared the cadets for the challenges of national service. Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State pledged the state government’s support to the training institution.

The passing-out parade was attended by heads of security agencies, members of the Kano Emirate Council, families of the cadets, and other dignitaries. The event marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to reform the immigration service and enhance its operational efficiency. With the introduction of digital innovations and a focus on citizen-focused service delivery, the Nigerian Immigration Service is poised to play a critical role in strengthening national security and promoting economic development.
