The Ebonyi State government has denied allegations of attacking members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the People’s Club in Abakaliki. According to Sunday Nwanbam, Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-Party Affairs, the reports are inaccurate and the state government is not witch-hunting opposition politicians.
Nwanbam stated that the government maintains a cordial relationship with all 17 registered political parties in the state, as confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He emphasized that the government protects the interests of all parties and does not discriminate based on political affiliation.
The special adviser attributed the peaceful political climate in the state to the good administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru, who prioritizes peace and stability. Nwanbam noted that since the 2023 general election, there have been no political crises in the state, demonstrating the government’s commitment to harmony among political parties.
Regarding the alleged attack, Nwanbam clarified that no member of the ADC was attacked or arrested by government agents or security operatives. He advised political parties to operate peacefully and notify relevant authorities when hosting meetings, ensuring the safety and security of attendees.
The Ebonyi State government’s stance on inter-party relations is one of cooperation and mutual respect. As the special adviser to the governor, Nwanbam’s role is to foster a positive relationship between the government and all political parties, including the ADC. The government’s support for opposition parties is reflected in its provision of resources and assistance to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), an umbrella body representing all political parties in the state.
In the wake of the alleged attack, Nwanbam reassured the public that the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the state. He encouraged political parties to focus on their activities and programs, free from intimidation or harassment. The government’s position is clear: all political parties are valued and supported, and their rights to operate freely will be respected.
