Lagos lawmaker meets, sympathises with victims over Oworonshoki demolitions

The Lagos State House Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development recently convened a stakeholders’ meeting to address the demolition of buildings in Oworonshoki. The meeting was held at the palace of His Royal Majesty Oba Babatunde Saliu, the Oloworo of Oworonshoki, and was attended by Chairman Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Babatunde Okanlawon, who represents Kosofe Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

During the session, Hon. Okanlawon expressed sympathy for the affected residents, saying his thoughts and prayers were with those impacted by the demolition. He noted that the Lagos State Government has pledged compensation to the victims and announced plans to develop and reallocate portions of the reclaimed land to the rightful owners of the demolished properties. He clarified that he had no prior knowledge of or involvement in the demolition process, emphasizing his commitment to fairness, transparency, and due process in addressing his constituents’ concerns. He assured residents that he would work closely with the relevant authorities to resolve their issues.

The demolition has raised concerns among residents, who are seeking clarity on the government’s plans for the area. Hon. Okanlawon’s attendance at the stakeholders’ meeting demonstrates his dedication to representing his constituents and ensuring their voices are heard. While the government’s decision to demolish the buildings is part of its broader effort to develop and reclaim land in Oworonshoki, the promised compensation and relocation have been met with skepticism by some, who demand greater transparency and accountability.

As the situation unfolds, Hon. Okanlawon has pledged to defend the interests of his people and work toward a fair and equitable resolution. The outcome of the stakeholders’ meeting and the subsequent actions of the government will be closely watched by residents and other stakeholders eager to see how the issue is resolved.
