Presidency Reacts to Jonathan’s 2027 Presidential Bid

The Nigerian Presidency has responded to rumors of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential candidacy in the 2027 presidential election. According to Prof Jerry Gana, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Jonathan will contest the presidency on the PDP platform. However, the Presidency has raised concerns about Jonathan’s eligibility, citing constitutional requirements.

The spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, Mr Bayo Onanuga, stated that the court will ultimately decide whether Jonathan, who was sworn in twice as president, can contest the presidency again. The Presidency also criticized Jonathan’s economic record, alleging that his administration led to the downfall of the economy.

During Jonathan’s tenure, the country’s foreign reserves declined from $46 billion to below $30 billion, and the Excess Crude Account was depleted from $20 billion to $2 billion. The Presidency attributed this decline to Jonathan’s administration, which they claimed engaged in frivolous spending and damaged the economy.

In contrast, the Presidency highlighted President Tinubu’s economic achievements, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the abolition of multiple exchange rates. According to the Presidency, these reforms have stabilized the economy, with the Gross Domestic Product growing by 4.23% in 2025 Q2, outpacing the International Monetary Fund’s projection.

The Presidency also noted that inflation decreased to 20.12% in August 2025, the lowest level in three years, and the foreign reserves currently stand at $42.03 billion. The Naira has virtually stabilized, and investor confidence in the economy has been restored.

The potential candidacy of Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election has significant implications for Nigerian politics. The outcome of the election will depend on various factors, including the eligibility of candidates and the performance of the current administration. As the election approaches, the Nigerian people will have the opportunity to assess the records of the candidates and decide the future of the country.
