PDP Nullifies Cross River Congress, Forms Caretaker Committee

Bauchi: PDP clinches Shira council seat as APC boycotts by-election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a significant step in addressing its internal affairs in Cross River state. According to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the National Working Committee (NWC) has nullified the state congress and approved the formation of a Caretaker Committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.

The decision, made in accordance with the party’s constitutional provisions, follows a series of events that led to confusion over the congress in Cross River state. Although the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of the postponement of congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi states, a separate letter from the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, stated that the Cross River congress would proceed as planned. However, Ologunagba clarified that no congress took place in the state, despite some individuals assembling in Calabar.

The NWC’s action to set up a Caretaker Committee is also a response to the expiration of the tenure of the State Executive Committee of the Cross River State Chapter, which was elected four years ago. The Caretaker Committee, comprising 17 members, will manage the party’s affairs in the state from October 1st, 2025, for a period not exceeding three months, or until a new State Executive Committee is elected. The committee is chaired by Bassey Eko Ewa, with Bassey Joseph serving as Acting Secretary.

The PDP has urged its leaders, stakeholders, and members in Cross River state to remain united and work together for the progress of the party. This development comes as the party seeks to strengthen its internal structures and prepare for future elections. With the establishment of the Caretaker Committee, the PDP aims to ensure stability and continuity in its operations in Cross River state. The move is seen as a key step in the party’s efforts to reposition itself and address internal challenges, ultimately contributing to its overall growth and success.
