2027: 'It doesn't make sense' - Peter Obi on continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC)‑led federal government has significantly diminished Nigeria’s standing. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on the state of the nation, Obi reflected on the country’s history and its potential.

In 1999, Nigeria transitioned from military rule to democracy, marking the beginning of a new journey toward economic prosperity, freedom and justice. During that period the nation became Africa’s largest economy and strengthened its democratic institutions. At independence in 1960, Nigeria was poised to become a dominant force in Africa and a global powerhouse.

Obi noted, however, that over the last decade the APC’s leadership has been characterized by incompetence, divisiveness and corruption, resulting in Nigeria’s decline. He warned that the current administration’s policies have pushed more than 15 million people below the poverty line in its first year and that the government continues to pursue a tax regime that demands higher payments from citizens without delivering corresponding benefits.

The comments come as Nigeria grapples with persistent economic and social challenges, including high levels of poverty and unemployment. Critics argue that government policies have exacerbated these problems rather than addressing them effectively. Obi used the press conference to emphasize the importance of effective leadership and sound policies in tackling the nation’s difficulties and unlocking its potential.

As Nigeria moves forward, the issues raised by Obi are likely to remain central to public discussion and debate, shaping how the government responds to the country’s challenges and works to restore its standing as a promising nation.
