The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a notable internal dispute. National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu has challenged a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, which announced the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom state Executive Committee (EXCO) and the creation of a 31‑member caretaker committee led by Barrister Igwat Umoren for a three‑month interim period pending new state congresses.
Senator Anyanwu contended that the announcement is null and void. In a statement to the State Chairman, he clarified that no formal meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) took place to approve such a decision, and that it is not within the National Publicity Secretary’s authority to implement NWC decisions. Consequently, the press release is deemed invalid, and the PDP’s state working committee in Akwa Ibom remains intact.
The NWC is the body responsible for key decisions concerning the party’s operations and structure. Senator Anyanwu reassured the State Chairman that the existing EXCO should continue its duties as outlined in the PDP Constitution (2017, as amended). This episode underscores the importance of adhering to established protocols and procedures within the party’s governance framework.
The dispute over the Akwa Ibom state EXCO’s dissolution carries significant implications for the PDP’s operations in the state. As the party works to resolve the issue, it must ensure that all actions conform to the constitution and recognized decision‑making processes. The next steps will be closely watched as the PDP seeks to maintain stability in its Akwa Ibom chapter.
