Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after attending the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and engaging in strategic meetings in Germany, where he represented President Bola Tinubu. According to a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice-President’s week-long international engagement included delivering President Tinubu’s national statement at the UNGA.
During his address, Shettima called for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations, emphasizing the need for Africa to have greater control over its substantial mineral resources, valued at $700 billion. He also strengthened partnerships with key international stakeholders, including the United Kingdom and the Gates Foundation. Furthermore, Shettima met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who commended Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
In addition to his UNGA engagements, the Vice-President showcased Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition opportunity to global investors, highlighting the country’s potential for growth and development in this sector. He also reassured the Nigerian diaspora community that the President Tinubu administration is committed to engaging with them and incorporating their perspectives into its policies and programs.
