Former Nigerian Senate Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, has expressed confidence that Plateau State will remain a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), regardless of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s potential defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Mwadkwon’s statement comes amidst speculation that Mutfwang may leave the PDP to contest the governorship position in the 2027 election under the APC banner.
Mwadkwon, who previously represented Plateau North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, made his remarks during an interaction with journalists in Jos. He dismissed suggestions that Mutfwang is planning to defect to the APC, citing the governor’s recent denial of such rumors. The former senator emphasized that Plateau State’s affinity for the PDP remains unwavering, regardless of the governor’s actions.
According to Mwadkwon, the people of Plateau State have a deep-seated loyalty to the PDP, which would persist even if Governor Mutfwang were to leave the party. He advised Mutfwang to remain in the PDP, stating that it is in the governor’s best interest to do so. Mwadkwon also expressed confidence that the PDP would find a suitable replacement for Mutfwang if he were to defect, and that the party would ultimately emerge victorious in the 2027 election.
Mutfwang has publicly denied any intention of joining the APC on several occasions, which Mwadkwon cited as evidence that the governor is unlikely to defect. The former senator’s comments are significant, given the ongoing speculation about Mutfwang’s potential defection and its potential impact on the political landscape of Plateau State.
The PDP has historically maintained a strong presence in Plateau State, and Mwadkwon’s comments suggest that the party is well-positioned to retain its dominance in the state, regardless of the governor’s actions. As the 2027 election approaches, the dynamics of Plateau State’s political landscape will likely continue to evolve, with the PDP and APC vying for control of the state.
