The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has responded to claims that it is no longer a viable political force, with its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, arguing that the party’s continued relevance is evidenced by its consistent presence in public discourse. Ologunagba made these remarks during a recent appearance on Channels TV, where he addressed the narrative surrounding the PDP’s alleged demise.
According to Ologunagba, the fact that critics constantly discuss the PDP suggests that the party remains a significant entity in Nigerian politics. He questioned why those claiming the PDP is “dead” continue to monitor its activities and speak about it frequently. Ologunagba asserted that this attention underscores the PDP’s position as a major political force, stating that “if PDP is dead as they claim, why are they still obsessed with us?”
Ologunagba also pushed back against the characterization of the PDP as a “failed party” due to its past election losses. Instead, he attributed the party’s challenges to defections driven by intimidation and harassment from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the situation as a case of “intimidation and coercion by the APC to lure members away.”
When asked about the potential presidential candidacy of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Ologunagba acknowledged Makinde’s qualifications but emphasized that the PDP would prioritize presenting its strongest candidate for the 2027 elections. He stated, “Is he qualified? Yes. But the PDP will put forward its best candidate, someone who can defeat the APC in the 2027 elections.”
Ologunagba expressed confidence in the PDP’s stability and focus on rebuilding, highlighting the party’s preparations for its upcoming special convention in Ibadan. The convention is seen as a crucial step in the party’s efforts to reposition itself ahead of future elections. As the PDP moves forward, its ability to navigate the country’s complex political landscape and respond to challenges from opposing parties will be closely watched.
