Obidient Movement Demands Arrest of NURTW Chairman Over Death Threats

Threat to kill APC opponents: Obidient Movement demands arrest of Lagos NURTW Chairman, Sego

The Obidient Movement has called for the arrest and prosecution of Adekunle Mustapha, also known as Sego, the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). This comes after a video surfaced showing Sego threatening to kill anyone who votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State during the 2027 elections.

In a statement, the movement’s National Coordinator, Tanko Yunusa, condemned Sego’s threat, describing it as part of desperate attempts by the APC to intimidate voters. The movement recalled the violence perpetrated by NURTW members and other thugs during the 2023 elections, which resulted in the killing and maiming of many voters, including supporters of the Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi.

The Obidient Movement believes that Sego’s threat is a continuation of the APC’s efforts to suppress opposition and maintain its grip on power in Lagos State. The movement has called on President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police, to take immediate action against Sego and others involved in similar threats and violent acts.

The movement has also drawn the attention of the international community to Sego’s threat, describing it as a crime against humanity and a threat to peace in Nigeria. Yunusa emphasized that the international community should take note of the actions and inactions of those responsible for these threats and violence.

The call for Sego’s arrest and prosecution comes amid concerns about the rising incidence of political violence and intimidation in Nigeria. The 2023 elections were marked by widespread violence and allegations of rigging, and there are fears that the 2027 elections could be similarly marred by violence and intimidation.

The Obidient Movement’s call for action against Sego and others involved in similar threats and violence is seen as an attempt to prevent a repeat of the violence and intimidation that characterized the 2023 elections. The movement’s efforts to highlight the issue and draw international attention to it may help to put pressure on the authorities to take action to prevent political violence and ensure a free and fair election in 2027.
