The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State is seeking spiritual intervention following the mysterious deaths of five women leaders in local councils across the state. The sudden deaths, which occurred over a two-month period, have sparked fear among female local government officials in Lagos.
The most recent incident involved Mrs Adebimpe Akinola, a Council Manager in Coker Aguda LCDA, who died on September 29, 2025. This death has brought the total number of fatalities to five, prompting concerns about the safety and well-being of women in local government positions.
The Lagos State government had recently sworn in newly elected Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, marking the commencement of a fresh administration at the grassroots level. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had charged the newly elected officials to deliver dividends of democracy and deepen development at the local government level.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission had presented certificates of return to the elected Chairmen and Councilors who emerged winners in the local government polls. However, the recent spate of deaths has cast a shadow over the newly elected administration.
The Lagos APC has described the deaths as painful and shocking, and is in the process of setting up a special committee to investigate the incidents. The party spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, stated that the committee will aim to determine the causes of the deaths and prevent similar incidents in the future. Prayer interventions are also being considered to ward off the spirit of death across the councils.
As the investigation unfolds, the Lagos APC is awaiting a reasonable mourning period to pass before implementing its intervention plan. The party is taking a proactive approach to address the concerns of female local government officials and ensure their safety and well-being. The incident has highlighted the need for increased support and protection for women in public service, particularly at the local government level.
