Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa death probe underway in Paris

South Africa has dispatched a team of seasoned investigators to Paris to participate in the investigation into the death of its ambassador, Nathi Mthethwa. The 58-year-old diplomat’s body was found in the inner courtyard of the Hyatt Regency hotel on Tuesday morning, having fallen from the 22nd floor. National police commissioner Fannie Masemola announced that five top police officers will collaborate with French investigators to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry.

Mthethwa had been reported missing by his wife on Monday after she received a concerning message from him. According to a French prosecutor, the message indicated that Mthethwa apologized and expressed his intention to end his life. While initial investigations suggest that his death may have been a deliberate act, concerns have been raised about possible foul play.

Mthethwa’s career was marked by controversy, having served as an ally of former South African President Jacob Zuma, who faces corruption charges. As police minister, Mthethwa oversaw the 2012 Marikana massacre, in which 34 striking miners were killed by police. Additionally, he was implicated in wrongdoing by several judicial commissions. Just two weeks prior to his passing, Mthethwa was accused of obstructing justice during his tenure as police minister in 2011, according to testimony presented to the Madlanga Commission.

The Madlanga Commission is investigating political interference in policing, and it is unclear whether Mthethwa was scheduled to appear as a witness. Mthethwa’s family is currently awaiting the completion of formalities before his remains can be repatriated from France. The investigation into his death is ongoing, with South African and French authorities working together to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The death of Ambassador Mthethwa has significant implications for South Africa, particularly in light of his complex and often contentious career. As the investigation continues, it is likely that more information will come to light regarding the events leading up to his death. For now, the focus remains on supporting the family and ensuring that the inquiry is conducted in a thorough and transparent manner. The South African government has pledged to cooperate fully with French authorities to determine the facts surrounding Mthethwa’s death.
