The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over N4 billion in state funds intended for the Dala Inland Dry Port project. The probe centers on the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, during which the funds were allegedly diverted.
Reports indicate that the money was used to finance a contract for infrastructure development at the port, shortly after the state’s 20% equity in the company was transferred to Ganduje’s family in 2020. This transfer reportedly removed Kano State as a co-owner of the project and installed Ganduje’s children as directors and shareholders.
Notably, the contract was awarded despite the state no longer holding ownership in the project at the time. The commission’s investigation has reached an advanced stage, with some individuals of interest already invited for questioning. One such person was arrested and later released on bail after providing useful information, according to Saidu Yahya, Chairman of the PCACC.
Yahya stated that the commission has established a prima facie case and plans to take the matter to court once the investigation is completed. Additionally, one of the individuals involved is currently residing in Yola, Adamawa State. The investigation highlights concerns over potential corruption and abuse of power in the handling of public funds and state assets.
The Dala Inland Dry Port project was intended to boost economic development in Kano State, but the alleged diversion of funds has raised questions about the project’s viability and the transparency of the state’s financial dealings. The PCACC’s investigation aims to uncover the truth behind the alleged misappropriation and ensure accountability for those involved.
As the investigation nears completion, the commission’s findings are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged diversion of funds. The case has significant implications for the management of public resources and the fight against corruption in Nigeria. The outcome of the investigation and any subsequent legal action will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for addressing similar cases of alleged corruption in the country.
