The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria is gearing up for the 2027 general elections, with its leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, expressing confidence in the party’s preparedness to offer a credible alternative to the nation’s challenges. According to Adebayo, the SDP remains distinct from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a focus on integrity and clear principles.

Adebayo revealed that during his presidential campaign, some party members worked against him, including state chairmen who allegedly gave the party’s agent cards to another party. He cited the example of Kwara, where the party discovered a significant discrepancy in vote counting, with only 22,000 votes recorded out of over 122,000 cast. To address such issues, the party is replacing certain leaders and bringing in new members.

Adebayo emphasized that building a political party comprised of selfless and patriotic individuals takes time. He stated that the SDP is focused on creating a structure rooted in patriotism and selflessness, with members who are in politics solely to create a better country. The party aims to correct the foundational flaws inherited from early nationalists such as Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Ahmadu Bello through value-based politics and people-oriented leadership.
