The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State has expressed deep concern over the escalating cases of political thuggery and insecurity across the state. The party is calling for immediate measures to address the situation, which it believes threatens the stability of the region.
During a press briefing following a stakeholders’ meeting in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday, the party’s representative, Chiroman Kabi, Ibrahim Mohammed-Mera, highlighted the worsening security challenges and the rise of political violence in the state. He cited a recent incident in Argungu, where thugs allegedly attacked attendees at a wedding ceremony in a mosque, describing the incident as “unacceptable” and a “dangerous signal ahead of future political activities.”
Mohammed-Mera emphasized that it is unbecoming for any political leader to support or finance such acts, and the ADC condemns these incidents in totality. He called for peace to prevail in Kebbi, stressing that the spread of insecurity across the state is a pressing concern. The recent killing of a Nigerian soldier in Sakaba Local Government Area was recalled, with banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities continuing unabated.
The ADC chieftain noted that these criminal activities have left citizens traumatized, farmlands deserted, and economic activities crippled. He urged the state and federal governments, as well as security agencies, to adopt coordinated and intelligence-driven strategies to restore peace and order in the region. Mohammed-Mera also cautioned against the use of intimidation and aggression by political actors, warning that such actions undermine democratic values and can have far-reaching consequences.
The situation in Kebbi State is a reflection of the broader security challenges facing Nigeria, where cases of political thuggery and insecurity have been on the rise in recent years. The call by the ADC for urgent measures to address the situation highlights the need for concerted efforts by governments and security agencies to restore peace and stability in the region. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken to address the growing concerns of insecurity and political violence in Kebbi State.
