A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, Chief David Sani Kente, has categorically denied rumors alleging his involvement in efforts to convince Governor Agbu Kefas of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to defect to the APC. Kente, who was the Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) gubernatorial candidate in Taraba State in 2015, described these claims as baseless and detrimental to his reputation within the political sphere.
In a recent interview, Kente clarified that he has had no discussions with Governor Kefas regarding any potential defection. He emphasized that the governor has not approached him or any other key APC members in Southern Taraba about joining the party. Kente expressed disappointment that such significant political decisions would be considered without consultation, particularly given his and other local leaders’ contributions to establishing the APC in the region in 2016.
The rumors have reportedly strained Kente’s relationships within the APC, with some members accusing him of secretly negotiating the governor’s defection. Kente lamented that these allegations have further damaged his political standing and programs within the party. He emphasized that traditional values in the Jukun community, from which both he and Governor Kefas hail, dictate respect and consultation on such matters.
Kente hinted that the evolving political landscape might compel him to reassess his previous vow not to run against Governor Kefas, citing the changing dynamics in the state’s political arena. Reflecting on his past political endeavors, Kente recalled his and Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya’s efforts to establish the APC in Southern Taraba. He reiterated that any decisions regarding the governor’s potential defection are being made without the knowledge or involvement of key APC stakeholders in the region.
Kente urged APC members to disregard the speculation and cease attributing the rumored defection plans to him. He reiterated that if Governor Kefas is indeed considering joining the APC, it is without the knowledge or participation of himself or other local party leaders. The denial comes amidst a complex political backdrop in Taraba State, where alliances and defections can significantly impact the balance of power. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and the public await clarity on the governor’s intentions and the potential implications for the state’s political landscape.
