Cameroon’s upcoming presidential election has taken an unexpected turn with the emergence of Tomaino Ndam Njoya, a seasoned parliamentarian who boasts considerable international credibility. Her candidacy, announced by the electoral commission, marks the third time a woman has contested the nation’s highest office and underscores her confidence in unseating long‑time President Paul Biya, who has ruled for four decades. Selected from an initial pool of more than 80 candidates, Ndam Njoya’s campaign is anchored by the slogan “Freedom. Justice. Progress,” reflecting her commitment to transformative change.
A veteran of Cameroonian politics, Ndam Njoya serves as mayor of Foumban and chairwoman of the Democratic Union for Cameroon (UDC). She has traversed the country, leveraging social media to amplify her message despite disparaging remarks from male rivals. Her outreach extends to the diaspora, with visits to Cameroonians in Germany, Italy, and France, where she urged expatriates to vote and support her bid. The campaign has attracted endorsements from former presidential contenders and resonated with many voters seeking unity and progress.
The growing influence of women’s organizations in Cameroon, bolstered by the first Women’s Convention in 2021 and the rise of over 81 female groups nationwide, has created a more favorable environment for female politicians. Ndam Njoya’s candidacy exemplifies this shift and, if successful, would place Cameroon among African nations led by women, such as Tanzania, Liberia, Malawi, and Namibia. Her platform includes unifying Cameroon as a federal state, tackling youth unemployment, and improving investment conditions.
Beyond domestic policy, Ndam Njoya has drawn attention in Germany for her commitment to making Cameroonian cultural property and colonial history accessible to museum visitors. She advocates a rotation principle for the restitution of looted cultural assets, emphasizing cultural exchange and cooperation between nations. As the election draws near, her candidacy is being closely monitored both within Cameroon and internationally. With extensive experience, international credibility, and a clear vision for progress, Ndam Njoya is emerging as a strong contender in Cameroon’s presidential race.
