US President Donald Trump has announced a breakthrough in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with both parties agreeing to the first phase of a Gaza peace plan. The plan, which was released by the White House last month, consists of 20 points aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. These points include an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages in exchange for prisoners, the disarmament of Hamas, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Palestinian enclave.
According to Trump, Hamas has agreed to release all Israeli hostages, while Israel has consented to withdraw its troops from Gaza to a mutually agreed-upon line. The US president expressed pride in the achievement, describing it as the “first steps towards a strong, durable and everlasting peace.” Trump also extended his gratitude to mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye for their roles in facilitating the talks, which have been taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, since Monday.
The development comes after a significant escalation of violence in the region. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of more than 250 hostages. The subsequent Israeli military operation in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 67,000 Palestinians, according to figures from the Hamas-run health authorities in the region. It is believed that around 20 of the 48 remaining hostages are still alive, based on reports from Israeli media.
Trump indicated that he may visit the Middle East in the coming days to further support the peace process, stating that the talks have been “going along very well.” The agreement between Israel and Hamas marks a significant step towards resolving the longstanding conflict in the region. The international community will be closely watching the progress of the peace plan, with the hope that it will lead to a lasting and peaceful resolution.
