PDP Northern Group Backs Jonathan for 2027 Presidency

2027: Why Goodluck Jonathan is attractive - ACF's Publicity Secretary, Muhammad-Baba

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Northern Support Group has announced its endorsement of former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. This decision was made public in a communiqué issued after the group’s 8th meeting, which took place in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, from Wednesday to Thursday.

According to the communiqué, signed by the group’s Northern Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, and North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi, Jonathan is seen as the best option to restore unity within the party and promote national cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections. The group, comprising PDP loyalists and support groups from the 19 northern states, expressed confidence in the leadership of acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and commended his efforts to reconcile party members.

The group urged Damagum to take disciplinary action against party members allegedly involved in anti-party activities, citing concerns that some leaders are undermining the reconciliation process and collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress. Despite these challenges, the group believes the PDP still enjoys strong support in the North and called on members to unite and rebuild the party ahead of the next general elections.

Addressing concerns over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again, the group maintained that the issue has been resolved and should not distract the party. The group pledged its continued loyalty to the PDP and expressed confidence that, with collective effort, the party could regain power at both national and state levels in 2027.

The endorsement of Jonathan by the PDP’s Northern Support Group is significant, as it reflects the group’s desire for a unified and strong party ahead of the 2027 elections. With the party’s reconciliation efforts ongoing, the group’s support for Jonathan may influence the party’s nomination process. As the 2027 elections approach, the PDP’s ability to unite and present a strong candidate will be crucial in its bid to reclaim power.
