Ramaphosa declares special funeral for Ambassador Mthethwa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the late Ambassador Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa will be honored with a Special Official Funeral Category 2. The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal. Ambassador Mthethwa, who served as South Africa’s Head of Mission in Paris, France, passed away on September 30, 2025, at the age of 58.

Ambassador Mthethwa had a distinguished career, serving in various portfolios, including Sport, Arts and Culture, Police, and Safety and Security, during his 15-year tenure in the Cabinet. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to France in December 2023, he had a long history of political involvement and leadership. His experience and dedication to public service have been acknowledged by the government and the nation.

President Ramaphosa has extended his deepest condolences to Ambassador Mthethwa’s wife, Ms. Philisiwe Buthelezi, and the extended Mthethwa and Buthelezi families. The President has assured the families that the nation appreciates the diverse roles Ambassador Mthethwa played in serving the country. The Special Official Funeral Category 2 will include ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service, and the National Flag will be flown at half-mast from October 9 until the evening of the funeral.
