The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) announced that the Dangote refinery is supplying roughly 20 million litres of petrol each day across the country. This information was disclosed by NMDPRA Chief Executive Officer Farouk Ahmed at the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria’s annual conference in Lagos, where he was represented by spokesperson George Ene‑Ita.
Ahmed noted that the refinery’s operation has markedly changed the supply dynamics of petroleum products in Nigeria. With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote refinery is contributing up to 20 million litres of petrol daily—a substantial share of the nation’s average daily consumption of about 50 million litres. He expressed optimism that this contribution will grow in the future and emphasized the need to encourage the refinery to increase production to meet local demand.
To bolster energy security, Ahmed stressed the importance of operationalising petroleum product stocks in accordance with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021. Such stockpiling would provide a buffer against major supply disruptions. The authority’s announcement underscores the pivotal role the Dangote refinery—Nigeria’s largest—plays in the national petroleum supply chain and highlights progress toward energy self‑sufficiency.
The NMDPRA’s ongoing efforts aim to promote local refining, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, and strengthen energy security while meeting the country’s demand for fuel.
