SDP Urges INEC Chairman to Prioritize National Interest

INEC: Nigerians expect nothing short of prioritizing national interest - SDP to Amupitan

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to prioritize Nigeria’s national interest and work towards consolidating democracy. This call was made by the acting National Chairman of SDP, Dr. Sadìq Gombe, in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, in Abuja.

The SDP’s statement comes on the heels of widespread excitement and commendations from various quarters, including the presidency, over Amupitan’s appointment. The party hopes that Amupitan will translate this national enthusiasm into tangible results, particularly in the forthcoming off-circle governorship elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states. These elections are expected to serve as a litmus test for Amupitan’s capabilities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Given Amupitan’s impressive background, pedigree, and reputation for integrity and competence, the SDP is optimistic that he will discharge his duties with impeccable integrity and honor. The party expects Amupitan to build on the notable reforms initiated by his predecessors and give the rule of law precedence. Additionally, the SDP hopes that under Amupitan’s leadership, the commission will respect the sovereignty of political parties and refrain from interfering in their internal affairs.

The party also expects Amupitan to foster a positive environment within the commission by boosting staff morale, improving the commission’s public image, and increasing its credibility. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the SDP’s call for Amupitan to prioritize Nigeria’s national interest and consolidate democracy takes on added significance. The success of the upcoming governorship elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states will be crucial in determining the credibility and effectiveness of INEC under Amupitan’s leadership. As the electoral body prepares for these critical elections, all eyes will be on Amupitan to deliver on the expectations of Nigerians and consolidate the country’s democratic gains.
