The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has responded to the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, describing the remaining PDP leaders as “undertakers waiting to bury a dying party.”
According to Publicity Secretary of the APC in Lagos, Mr Seye Oladejo, the PDP’s claim that defections cannot weaken it is “laughable” and exposes the party’s state of denial. Oladejo stated that the ongoing defections are a result of years of deceit, lack of ideology, and betrayal among PDP leaders. He believes that even loyal PDP members have lost faith in a party that has refused to reform or present a credible alternative to Nigerians.
The APC spokesman noted that the party is not surprised by the defections, citing the PDP’s reliance on propaganda and empty promises during its 16-year rule. Oladejo accused the PDP of mismanaging the country and said it cannot suddenly reinvent itself as a credible opposition when it remains mired in confusion and leadership crises.
The recent defection of key PDP figures to the APC is seen as a reflection of growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Oladejo advised the PDP to conduct an honest post-mortem of its failures and accept that its influence in Nigeria’s political landscape has drastically faded. He views the defections as clear endorsements of the APC’s commitment to progress, stability, and people-centred leadership.
The PDP has been experiencing internal collapse, with many of its members defecting to the APC. This trend is expected to continue as the 2027 elections approach. The APC’s position is that Nigerians are increasingly rejecting the PDP’s brand of politics, opting instead for a party that prioritizes progress and stability. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the PDP will respond to its dwindling membership and influence.
