The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has expressed confidence in the party’s ability to remain strong and reclaim power in 2027. Despite recent defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed stated that the PDP is working to stabilize its ranks and rebuild public trust.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Mohammed acknowledged concerns over the defections of some governors and lawmakers to the APC. However, he noted that efforts are being made to strengthen the party and maintain its unity. Mohammed attributed the defections to coercive tactics employed by the APC-led federal government, aiming to weaken the opposition and push Nigeria towards a one-party system.
The governor emphasized that the PDP still enjoys massive grassroots support, which will ultimately contribute to its resurgence. He assured that he is committed to the party and that his state, Bauchi, has no element of division. Mohammed also acknowledged the possibility of further defections but stressed that the PDP’s structure remains intact.
Mohammed highlighted the PDP’s credentials as a credible platform capable of rebuilding the nation. He pointed out that most of the federal government’s major achievements were recorded under PDP administrations. The governor expressed optimism that the PDP will deliver positive change in 2027, citing the party’s ability to produce capable leaders.
Regarding the forthcoming PDP convention, Mohammed stated that the party leadership is working to resolve internal disputes and court cases aimed at destabilizing preparations. He dismissed speculation about possible defections by some PDP governors, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The PDP remains open to welcoming prominent figures who wish to associate with the party, according to Mohammed. He commented on speculations linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a possible 2027 presidential project, stating that the party is united and will come up with leadership that will be the best choice for Nigerians.
In summary, the PDP is focusing on strengthening its ranks and rebuilding public trust amidst recent defections. The party remains committed to its goal of reclaiming power in 2027, with Mohammed expressing optimism about the emergence of visionary leaders to challenge the APC’s politics. The outcome of the PDP’s efforts will be crucial in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
