The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has reacted to recent defections of key leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. APC spokesman Seye Oladejo called the PDP’s claim that the defections will not affect the party “laughable,” describing it as a “chronic state of denial, delusion, and self‑deception.” He attributed the wave of defections to the PDP’s internal weaknesses, citing “years of internal deceit, lack of ideology, and serial betrayal among its leaders.” Oladejo said the exodus confirms that even the PDP’s loyalists have lost faith in a party that has failed to reform itself or offer a viable alternative to Nigerians.
The APC is not surprised by the defections, pointing to the PDP’s history of mismanaging the nation during its 16‑year rule. Oladejo argued that the PDP has survived on propaganda and empty rhetoric and cannot suddenly reinvent itself as a credible opposition party. He described the remaining PDP members as “undertakers” waiting to perform the final rites for a “lifeless political carcass.”
Recent defections include several PDP governors, members of the House of Assembly, and other key figures who have joined the APC. In Ondo State, two remaining PDP members of the House of Assembly defected to the APC, citing an internal crisis within the opposition party. The APC views these defections as endorsements of its commitment to national renewal and people‑centered governance.
The PDP has been advised to conduct an honest post‑mortem of its failures and accept its waning relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape. With the era of deceitful opposition politics seemingly over, the APC believes the Nigerian people are speaking loudly: they prefer a party that represents progress, stability, and genuine leadership. As the political landscape continues to shift, it remains to be seen how the PDP will respond to its dwindling membership and loss of influence.
