Prince Adewole Adebayo, a former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has reaffirmed his commitment to the party, stating that he will not defect to any other political platform unless the SDP ceases to exist. He first joined the SDP in 1991 at the age of 19 and, despite pressure to switch allegiance, has remained a loyal member. Adebayo, who contested the 2023 presidential election, addressed rumors that the SDP is collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress, dismissing the allegations and emphasizing that his political activities are solely within the SDP. While acknowledging that some individuals in the party may sympathize with other parties, he stressed that such actions are not tolerated.
The SDP is currently undergoing a transformation led by younger politicians dedicated to reviving the party’s founding principles of fairness, equity, and justice. Adebayo noted that the party’s manifesto remains aligned with constitutional principles of good governance and the rule of law. He expressed concern about Nigeria’s state, citing corruption, poor governance, and economic mismanagement as major obstacles to progress, and attributed these challenges to the failure of successive administrations to fulfill promises of development and accountability.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Adebayo said the SDP will continue to promote issue‑based politics and work to rebuild public trust through ethical leadership. This approach is expected to resonate with voters seeking a more transparent and accountable government. As Nigeria prepares for its next elections, the SDP’s renewed emphasis on fairness, equity, and justice may appeal to citizens yearning for change, and Adebayo’s reaffirmation of loyalty reflects the party’s efforts to present a strong platform for the upcoming contests.
