A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Dr. Alex Chukwuemeka Obiechina, has commended Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, stating that it demonstrates the governor’s concern for the future. According to Obiechina, Governor Mbah’s second term was already guaranteed, even without joining the national ruling party.
Governor Mbah, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2023, is set to be officially received into the APC on Tuesday. Obiechina, speaking to journalists in Abuja, praised the governor’s courage and foresight in joining the APC, noting that he has brought excellence and zeal to governance in Enugu State. The APC chieftain also criticized the PDP, stating that the party had brought stagnation to the state over the past 26 years due to its alleged impunity, indiscipline, and resistance to change.
Obiechina, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Enugu State in 2011, reflected on his own experience with the party’s alleged impunity, which he claimed denied him his candidacy. He expressed relief that Governor Mbah had decided to leave the PDP, citing the party’s corruption, bad politics, and indiscipline. The APC chieftain also noted that the PDP had denied the South East region opportunities, including the chance to fly the party’s presidential flag in 1999, 2003, and 2023.
In a related development, some of Governor Mbah’s cabinet members, including Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, Dr. Amaka S. Ngene, and Dr. Felix Nnamani, have declared their support for the APC, waving the party’s flag at the Enugu State Government House. The cabinet members were seen in a viral video saying, “We are in the APC now, Jagaban all the way, APC from bottom to top.”
The decision of Governor Mbah and his cabinet members to join the APC is seen as a significant development in Enugu State politics. With the governor’s second term already secured, his move to the APC is expected to have implications for the state’s political landscape. The official reception of Governor Mbah into the APC on Tuesday is anticipated to be a major event, marking a new chapter in the state’s political history.
