The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating online criminal activities, declaring that such offenses will no longer be tolerated. According to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, cybercrime poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s economy, national security, and the daily lives of its citizens.
The declaration was made at the annual Cybercrimes Awareness Campaign and second National Consultations on the Cybercrimes Legal Framework in Nigeria, held in Abuja. The event, which kicked off with an awareness walk, aimed to promote a coordinated and informed national response to cybercrime. The minister, represented by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Abubakar Babadoko, emphasized that every online scam, impersonation, or hacking incident is punishable under the Cybercrimes Act.
The awareness walk was part of a larger effort to educate the public about the dangers of cybercrime and the importance of responsible technology use. The minister urged parents, teachers, business owners, and young people to protect their data, report suspicious activity, and use technology responsibly. He also encouraged the youth to channel their creativity into positive endeavors, such as innovation and entrepreneurship, rather than cybercrime.
The government has warned that law enforcement is evolving and that penalties for cybercrime will become stiffer. The ongoing review of the cybercrimes Act is expected to lead to faster prosecution, tighter coordination, and more severe penalties for offenders. The minister stressed that the fight against cybercrime requires a collaborative effort between government, the private sector, academia, and the public.
Other stakeholders, including the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, participated in the awareness walk. The event served as a reminder that cybercrime affects not only individuals but also the economy and national security. As the government continues to strengthen its efforts to combat cybercrime, it is essential for Nigerians to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves online. By working together, Nigeria can secure its cyberspace and create a safer digital environment for all.
