Enugu Governor Defects to APC for People’s Interest

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the PDP’s failure to recognize the needs of his constituents. In a state-wide broadcast, Mbah announced his decision, which he claimed was motivated by a desire to better serve the people who elected him.

Speaking to journalists, Mbah dismissed allegations of betrayal, stating that his defection was not a rejection of the PDP, but rather a necessary step to ensure the well-being of his people. He explained that after consulting with his constituents, it became clear that the PDP was no longer the optimal platform to serve their interests. Mbah emphasized that his loyalty lies with the people, not the political party.

The governor’s decision follows a period of consultation with his supporters, who initially entrusted him with their mandate under the PDP. However, Mbah believes that the APC offers a stronger platform to address the needs of his constituents. When asked if he owed an apology to those who felt he could represent them as a member of the PDP, Mbah maintained that his primary responsibility is to serve the people, not the party.

Mbah’s defection is significant, as it highlights the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape. The move may have implications for the political dynamics in Enugu State and beyond. As the governor navigates his new political affiliation, he will likely face scrutiny from his constituents and political opponents alike. The development is expected to shape the state’s political trajectory, with potential consequences for the upcoming elections.
