A group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, known as Enugu North APC Frontiers, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the long-standing issue of marginalization against the Enugu North Senatorial Zone. The request comes ahead of the president’s decision to replace the resigned minister, Uche Nnaji, who stepped down over allegations of certificate forgery.
In a letter to President Tinubu, signed by Barr Ejikeme Ugwu and Sydney Eze, the group highlighted the imbalance in ministerial appointments in Enugu State since 1999. According to their data, Enugu West has had four ministerial slots, Enugu East has had three, while Enugu North has not produced a minister in the same period. This, they argue, is a clear manifestation of marginalization and lack of fairness in the state.
The group emphasized that Enugu North, which constitutes over 52% of the state’s population, has been denied the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council and other executive leadership positions at the federal level. They pointed out that between 2015 and 2023, only a few individuals from the zone have held executive positions, including an ambassador and a commissioner.
Enugu North APC Frontiers assured the president that the zone is blessed with hardworking, honest, and God-fearing people, with an abundance of talents and professionals who can be appointed to drive the Renewed Hope Agenda. They expressed confidence that such individuals would discharge their duties with integrity.
The group respectfully prayed that President Tinubu consider appointing one of their qualified indigenes to represent Enugu State in the Federal Executive Council, thereby breaking the jinx of marginalization. They also requested that the president consider other qualified Enugu North indigenes for various positions in his government. In return, they promised to give the president and the APC their highest votes in the 2027 elections.
The appeal by Enugu North APC Frontiers highlights the need for fairness and equity in the distribution of political appointments in Enugu State. The group’s plea to President Tinubu is seen as an opportunity to address the long-standing issue of marginalization and promote inclusiveness in the state’s political landscape.
