Fresh violence erupted along the Ikom‑Obubra border despite Governor Bassey Otu’s ongoing peace efforts to resolve communal clashes between the two local government areas. The latest incident occurred on 11 October 2025 when armed men invaded cocoa farms around Mfam Osusoh Okpon, a border settlement between Ikom and Obubra. Eyewitnesses reported that several people were shot, including Junior Ebi Anara, a youth from the Okosora Clan, who was trying to stop the invaders from stealing harvested cocoa pods. The clash began when local youths mobilised to confront the attackers; one of the intruders opened fire, prompting the others to flee.

Residents said the recurring attacks have heightened tension and fear among farmers, many of whom have abandoned their farms. This incident marks the third attack on farmers in the Ikom‑Obubra border communities since Governor Otu initiated peace talks and directed both sides to maintain the status quo while the government works toward a lasting settlement. The renewed hostility has raised concerns about the fragile peace process, with locals calling for a stronger security presence.

Governor Otu’s attempts to end persistent communal clashes—between the Alesi, Ekukunela, and Agbaragba communities in Ikom and the Ochon, Isabang, and Odonget communities in Obubra—have yet to produce a lasting solution. The conflict threatens the local economy, as fear of attacks forces many farmers to leave their fields. Although the Nigerian government is addressing the root causes of the violence, the recent outbreak underscores the need for more effective measures to ensure the safety and security of the region’s communities.

As the situation unfolds, residents await a more substantial governmental response to halt the ongoing violence and provide a durable resolution to the communal clashes. The international community is also watching closely, aware that the conflict could destabilise the region and affect the livelihoods of thousands of people.
