Nigeria Government Accelerates Judicial Process

FG declares Wednesday public holiday — Daily Nigerian

The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking steps to expedite the judicial process, with a focus on reducing the backlog of inmates awaiting trial. According to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the government is working closely with the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to bridge the gap in the time frame for conviction of inmates. This effort aims to decongest correctional centers, particularly for those awaiting trial.

During an unscheduled visit to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the ministry is committed to finding innovative solutions to address the issue. He noted that over 200 inmates at the facility have been convicted, while approximately 804 are awaiting trial. The minister emphasized the need to design a methodology to address this disparity, with the goal of reducing the number of inmates awaiting trial in the coming weeks and months.

The Minister of Interior acknowledged that significant work remains to be done across the country’s 240 correctional centers. To address this, the ministry plans to conduct scheduled visits to correctional centers outside the Federal Capital Territory. This will enable stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association, to intervene effectively in the correctional service.

The Nigerian Bar Association President, Afam Osigwe, expressed support for the initiative, requesting data on inmates awaiting trial to facilitate the NBA’s efforts to provide legal assistance. He emphasized the need to identify cases pending against these inmates and explore options for their release, particularly for those who have spent more time awaiting trial than they would have served if convicted.

The collaboration between the government and stakeholders aims to ensure timely justice delivery and reduce the congestion in correctional centers. The dedication of correctional service personnel in catering to the needs of inmates was also recognized. As the government moves forward with its plans, the focus will remain on finding innovative solutions to address the challenges facing the correctional system and ensuring that justice is served in a timely and efficient manner.
