APC lacks spirit of democratic sportsmanship - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the recent defections of its governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on greed, selfishness and coercion. Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi said there is no compelling reason for a sitting governor to leave the party at this stage. He made the remark after Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State joined the APC, accompanied by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and just 24 hours after Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also switched to the ruling party.

Abdullahi stressed that the PDP has resolved its major internal problems and is currently in good standing. He described the defections as driven by self‑interest, greed, possible second‑term ambitions, coercion, intimidation and the allure of the ruling party. The spokesperson expressed confidence that the party will move forward, calling the defections “good riddance to bad rubbish” and believing the PDP will emerge stronger and more cohesive as it approaches its convention, scheduled for exactly one month from now.

He questioned the rationale behind the governors’ decisions to defect to the APC, pointing to the party’s track record over the past ten years. Abdullahi noted that the PDP remains strong in most states and sees no reason for the defections other than selfishness and greed. He bid farewell to the defectors, stating that the PDP will focus on “retrieving the country from the current government,” which he described as an “army of occupation” masquerading as democrats. As the nation heads toward the 2027 elections, Abdullahi emphasized that the battle is no longer between the PDP and the APC, but against the APC and its perceived negative impact on Nigerians.
