A heated exchange occurred during the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers game on Saturday, as tempers flared at the end of the second period. The incident began when Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson was hit from behind by Rangers forward Sam Carrick while clearing the puck. In response, Montreal defenseman Arber Xhekaj engaged in a lengthy fight with Carrick, exchanging punches for nearly 35 seconds before being separated by referees.

Both Xhekaj and Carrick received five-minute majors for fighting. Despite the intense moment, the Canadiens ultimately lost 4-3 to the Rangers. Montreal’s goals came from Juraj Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki, and Noah Dobson, while Sam Montembeault made 18 saves. The Rangers’ scoring efforts were led by J.T. Miller, Matthew Robertson, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad, with Jonathan Quick stopping 21 shots.

The game started strongly for the Canadiens, with Slafkovsky opening the scoring just 93 seconds in, assisted by Cole Caufield. Suzuki doubled the lead on a power play, but the Rangers responded with a goal from Zibanejad midway through the period. The Rangers tied the game early in the third, with Miller deflecting a point shot past Montembeault. Robertson then gave New York the lead with a slap shot, and Panarin extended the advantage to 4-2. Dobson brought the Canadiens within one, but they were unable to equalize.

Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis reflected on the game, stating, “It’s a 60-minute game. When a team scores the next goal to make it 2-1, it changes the game.” He also emphasized the need for his team to perform better in front of their goalkeeper, Montembeault. The Montreal Canadiens will face the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, while the New York Rangers will take on the Minnesota Wild.
