Instead of preparing strong defence, you joined protest - Presidency slams Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer

Nigerian Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, has criticized Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, for taking part in a protest in Abuja. Onanuga described Ejimakor’s actions as unethical and deserving of sanctions, invoking the principle of sub judice in Kanu’s ongoing treason case. He noted that Ejimakor was seen among a group of protesters allegedly mobilised by activist Omoyele Sowore and questioned why a lawyer would join a demonstration while the case remains pending in court.

Onanuga argued that participation in the protest violates professional ethics and called on legal authorities to consider disciplinary action against Ejimakor. He emphasized that lawyers should concentrate on preparing a strong defence rather than resorting to extra‑legal tactics to influence the process. The prosecution has already concluded its case, leaving it to Kanu’s lawyers to mount a robust defence.

The criticism comes as Kanu’s treason case continues to unfold. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has long advocated for the separation of the Igbo people from Nigeria, a stance that has sparked widespread debate and polarized public opinion. The incident underscores the complexities of the case and the need for all parties to adhere to professional ethics and the rule of law.

As the proceedings advance, scrutiny of the actions of lawyers and activists is likely to increase. The Nigerian legal community will be watching closely to see how the situation develops and what response follows Onanuga’s condemnation.
