The National Peace Committee, led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abukakar, has announced plans to facilitate a peace accord among candidates participating in the upcoming 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, scheduled for November 8. This initiative aims to promote a peaceful electoral process and prevent potential conflicts.
According to Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo, Executive Director of The Kukah Centre and Head of the Secretariat of the NPC, the committee will engage with stakeholders and candidates from the 16 participating political parties to sign a peace accord. This agreement is intended to encourage candidates to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values they represent and to refrain from encouraging their supporters to engage in violence.
Barkindo emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Anambra State, citing the need to pass a peaceful state to future generations. He expressed confidence in the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a credible and transparent election, particularly with the new INEC chairman at the helm.
The committee’s expectations include a peaceful election, with all candidates and their supporters adhering to the code of conduct. The committee has advised candidates to establish situation rooms and to discourage their supporters from engaging in violent behavior. Additionally, voters have been cautioned against spreading misinformation and fake results, which could provoke violence.
The engagement, attended by various stakeholders, including security agencies, traditional institutions, civil society, media, and governorship contenders, featured a presentation of the peace accord expected to be signed by the contenders. The National Peace Committee’s efforts aim to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the election, reflecting the progressive and enterprising spirit of Anambra State.
With the election approaching, the committee’s initiative is seen as a positive step towards promoting peace and stability in the state. The success of this effort will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders, including candidates, supporters, and voters, in adhering to the principles of the peace accord and promoting a violence-free electoral process.
