Nigerian Army Brigadier General Nicholas Rume Takes Command

New army commander takes over at 22 Armoured Brigade in Kwara

The Nigerian Army has announced the appointment of Brigadier General Nicholas Nemetne Rume as the 23rd Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, located in Ilorin, Kwara State. This development is in line with the recent postings and appointments of senior officers within the army. Brigadier General Rume assumed command on October 22, 2025, during a formal handing-over and taking-over ceremony at the brigade’s headquarters.

The ceremony marked the transition of leadership from Brigadier General Ezra Bawa Barkins, who expressed his gratitude to God and the Chief of Army Staff for the opportunity to serve as Commander. He applauded the officers and soldiers for their loyalty, professionalism, and support during his tenure, urging them to extend the same cooperation to his successor. This, he emphasized, would be crucial in ensuring continued operational success within the brigade’s area of responsibility.

Key highlights of the event included the signing of handing-over and taking-over notes, a farewell address to troops by the outgoing Commander, and the symbolic presentation of the command flag to Brigadier General Rume. Notably, the hoisting of the new brigade flag at the Quarter Guard signified the beginning of a new era in the brigade’s leadership. This gesture, as explained by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, underscored the commencement of Brigadier General Rume’s command.

As the 22 Armoured Brigade plays a significant role in Nigeria’s security architecture, the change in leadership is expected to maintain, if not enhance, the brigade’s operational effectiveness. The appointment of Brigadier General Rume is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to reposition itself for improved performance and efficiency. With his assumption of command, expectations are high that the brigade will continue to contributemeaningfully to the nation’s security and stability. The transition signals a new chapter for the 22 Armoured Brigade, with Brigadier General Rume poised to build on the achievements of his predecessor while introducing new strategies to address emerging security challenges.
