The Jigawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed disagreement with the northern caucus’s endorsement of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the unopposed candidate for the position of National Chairman. According to Hon. Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, the State Chairman of the party, this decision contradicts the interests of North-West stakeholders.
The northern PDP caucus had previously resolved to zone the position of National Chairman to the North-West, directing stakeholders in the zone to nominate a suitable candidate. However, before the stakeholders could meet to discuss the nomination, the northern caucus went ahead and nominated Turaki. Gumel noted that this move was made without notifying key leaders, including Dr. Sule Lamido, until an hour before the meeting.
Gumel emphasized that the nominated candidates had not purchased forms to indicate their interest in the position. He also stated that Dr. Sule Lamido was suggested by national party leaders as a potential candidate to revive the party. The Jigawa State PDP is now waiting to see if their resolution will be considered.
The party’s primary concern is to ensure that the PDP is led by someone capable of addressing its current challenges. With 26 years of experience in the party, the Jigawa State chapter is keen on avoiding any actions that could destabilize the party. Gumel reiterated that they would take all necessary steps to ensure the right person assumes the leadership of the PDP, prioritizing the unity and progress of both the party and the country.
The development highlights the ongoing dynamics within the PDP as it navigates its leadership structure. The party’s ability to manage its internal processes and make decisions that reflect the interests of its stakeholders will be crucial in the coming days. As the situation unfolds, the Jigawa State chapter’s stance serves as a reminder of the need for inclusive decision-making processes within the party.
