VAU condemns alleged blackmail of MAAUN lecturer, varsity — Daily Nigerian

The Voice of African Universities (VAU) has denounced an alleged blackmail attempt involving a faculty member at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano. According to VAU, the incident began when a parent and his daughter tried to bypass standard examination procedures. The parent arrived uninvited at the exam venue and demanded that his daughter be allowed to sit for the test without the required exam clearance card. When the supervising lecturer, Dr. M. Adamu, insisted on compliance with university regulations, a verbal confrontation ensued.

VAU says the parent and student then covertly recorded the exchange, edited the footage to misrepresent Dr. Adamu’s actions, and circulated it on social media. The organization described this as a “calculated attempt to undermine institutional integrity and academic governance.” It emphasized that respect for ethics and due process is the foundation of higher education and that no individual is above institutional rules.

VAU praised Dr. Adamu’s “measured and principled response,” calling it an example of professionalism under provocation. The organization affirmed a zero‑tolerance policy for attempts to intimidate or blackmail educators performing their lawful duties, noting that such incidents threaten academic freedom and fairness. It commended MAAUN for taking prompt disciplinary and legal measures and called for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions against those responsible.

The case highlights a growing trend of individuals using influence or social‑media manipulation to subvert academic rules. VAU urged universities across Africa to unite in defending merit‑based systems and protecting educators from undue pressure. It pledged to continue monitoring developments and advocating for stronger safeguards against similar abuses.

MAAUN has faced comparable challenges in the past, with concerns over academic integrity and institutional autonomy. In response, the university has strengthened its examination procedures and implemented measures to protect faculty from harassment. VAU’s stance reflects its commitment to upholding academic standards and promoting a culture of respect and professionalism in higher education. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining academic integrity and shielding educators from undue influence, a message that is likely to resonate with institutions and educators throughout Africa.
