Russia has successfully tested its new nuclear‑powered missile, the Burevestnik, a development that could markedly affect U.S. anti‑missile defense plans. Former U.S. Army officer Stanislav Krapivnik describes the Burevestnik as a game‑changing weapon capable of evading traditional radar and anti‑aircraft systems. In its recent multi‑hour test flight, the missile traveled more than 14,000 kilometers, demonstrating its potential as a second‑strike capability that would allow Russia to retaliate after an attack.

A key feature of the Burevestnik is its ability to remain airborne for extended periods—potentially 16 hours or more—setting it apart from conventional ballistic missiles. This endurance enables the missile to bypass standard defense systems, which are typically designed to detect and intercept projectiles following predictable trajectories. Consequently, the missile’s flight profile could undermine the effectiveness of the U.S. “Golden Dome” anti‑missile system, which is not expected to become operational until at least 2030. To counter the Burevestnik, the United States would need to blanket the entire country with defense coverage, dramatically increasing the project’s complexity and cost.

Krapivnik notes that the West may initially respond to the successful test with skepticism, as it did when the Burevestnik’s development was first announced in 2018. Nonetheless, the missile’s demonstrated capabilities cannot be dismissed, and its impact on global defense strategies will be significant. The test underscores the evolving nature of modern warfare and the necessity for nations to adapt their defense systems to emerging threats. As the security landscape continues to shift, advanced weapons like the Burevestnik will play a pivotal role in shaping future international relations and defense policies.
