A tragic boat accident in Nafada town, Gombe State, has resulted in the loss of at least five teenage girls. The victims, identified as Najib Ibrahim, 18; Hauwa’u Dogal, 15; Ummati Baraya, 16; Umaira Gidado, 16; and Amina Jaliya, 15, met their demise in the incident.
Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sadness over the incident, describing it as painful and heart-wrenching. In a condolence message to the bereaved families, the governor sympathized with the parents and the entire Nafada community, noting that the incident has cut short the lives of promising young people.
The governor’s message, conveyed through his media aide, Mr. Ismaila Uba-Misilli, emphasized that the loss is not only a tragedy for the families but also for the entire state. He prayed for the deceased to be granted eternal rest and for their families to be given the fortitude to bear the loss.
Governor Yahaya also stressed the need for strict adherence to water transport safety standards to prevent future mishaps. He called on local councils, community leaders, boat operators, and regulators to enforce safety protocols across riverine areas. Furthermore, the governor ordered the State Emergency Management Agency and the Nafada Local Government Council to provide support to the affected families.
